REDCLIFF: Residents in New-stands, Rutendo risk the dangers of being electrocuted by electricity power lines passing through their roof tops, this publication can reveal.
The new high density residential area has been approved by the Municipality of Redcliff with some of the stands being situated under heavy industrial electrical power lines from Steel Makers Zimbabwe Unit 2 to its Unit 1 workstation. This is despite the dangers posed by these on inhabitants.
Residents who have constructed their houses now fear for their lives since the Municipality is not taking action despite previously promising the residents during the servicing and buying phase that it will deal with the matter.
“The council made a promise, after we bought the stands that it would remove and change the course of the electricity lines from Steeler. But we have since managed to build our houses and moved in yet nothing has been done. Only those which belong to the Ministry has been attended to, and of course we fear for our lives especially this rainy season which has a lot of lightning,” said a Newsstands resident whose identity cannot be revealed.
Speaking in an interview with this reporter, Ward 6 councilor M Pick clarified that the town council is aware and in the process of engaging stakeholders involved to make sure the power line is changed for the safety of residents.
“The council is aware and measures are underway that the power lines be removed and its course changed …as we have already done with the ministry areas where it has been changed and the area is now safer to reside,” she said.
What is more critical about this issue and situation on the ground has been the timeframe and the timeline of the changing process which has highly been exceeded and if the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) is aware of the situation.
Efforts to hear from the ZETDC Redcliff Client Service Centre were unfruitful as their lines went unanswered up to the time of publication.
The reporter spoke with Redcliff Mayor Clayton Masiyatsva on the current situation and the danger it poses to the residents, but he surprisingly pointed out that he was not aware of the status at Newstands.
“I am not aware of such situation, I don’t know anything about that problem at all,” he said.
With the news of some people being electrocuted due to electricity cables during this rain season, residents at Newstands keep can only pray and hope that the same situation does not befall them.
